Event Overview
For the fifth consecutive year, Peanut Productions partnered with Brainwave Australia to deliver the charity’s 30th Anniversary Great Gatsby Gala at the National Gallery of Victoria. Brainwave Australia supports more than 1,900 children and families affected by childhood brain conditions, and the brief called for a night significant enough to match three decades of impact, delivered within the realities of a charity budget. With 300-plus guests locked in well ahead of the date, the event became the first sell-out gala in Brainwave’s history before a single detail on the night had been confirmed.
Our Approach
Brainwave had already settled on a Great Gatsby theme and secured several of the night’s biggest drawcards, including MC Stephanie Anderson of Nine, auctioneer Shawn Cosgrove, comedian Anthony Lehmann and headline entertainer Tim Campbell. From there, Peanut Productions’ role was to translate a bold creative vision into an experience that could be delivered at the standard the milestone demanded, sourcing suppliers, shaping the guest journey and finding smart substitutes wherever ambition outstripped budget, without the final result ever looking or feeling like a compromise. “After five years of supporting Brainwave, I’m incredibly proud of how this partnership has evolved,” said Michael Mastrodimos, Founder and Creative Director of Peanut Productions.
Experience Design
Guests arrived beneath Gandel Hall’s Leonard French stained-glass ceiling through the NGV’s iconic water wall entrance, along a red carpet lit to set the scene for the era, welcomed by a host in a striking champagne-glass skirt, a three-piece jazz trio and roaming oyster shucking with a choice of toppings. A custom AI photo booth captured the moment, a custom 30-year anniversary retrospective video traced Brainwave’s history, and silent and live auction tables lined the entry, giving guests their first look at the evening’s prizes before they had even reached their seats.
Inside, the room’s styling needed to honour the Gatsby brief without crowding a night built around shared dining and live bidding. Peanut Productions designed sleek, minimal centrepieces using pampas grass, draped fabric and piles of pearls, sourcing the exact look originally quoted at more than double the price for a fraction of the cost, and leaving the table space guests needed for platters, auction paddles and programs.
The night’s centrepiece activation, “Light Up the Night”, offered guests wristbands tied to one of three major prizes. Organisers had planned to release them gradually, unsure whether they would sell at all. They sold out completely.
Event Execution
Peanut Productions managed the full production and delivery, coordinating more than a dozen suppliers and partners, including Mercedes-Benz Australia, Penfolds, Coopers Brewery, Rob Dolan Wines, IVE Group and DPM Financial Services, across entertainment, beverage, photography and styling, alongside a floor of volunteers who kept the live auction moving with mobile payment terminals throughout the night. A pre-auction video message from Michael Mastrodimos set the tone before bidding opened, and the room responded: every one of Brainwave’s charity bears sold, one guest donated on the spot with no item attached, and Tim Campbell closed his set by announcing a final total that made this Brainwave’s strongest Gala result since 2018.
Event Outcomes
Brainwave Australia’s 30th Anniversary Gala raised $206,000, its strongest Gala result since 2018 and a significant lift on the charity’s five-year high of around $111,000, in front of a sold-out room. “To raise more than $206,000 in one evening is an incredible result and our strongest Gala fundraising total in recent years,” said Kristin Flanagan, Director of Fundraising, Marketing and Communications at Brainwave Australia. “We are enormously grateful to Michael Mastrodimos and the entire Peanut Productions team. Their creativity, generosity and commitment over the past five years have helped bring our Gala back to life.” For Peanut Productions, the result reinforced what a five-year partnership built on trust can achieve: a milestone night that felt exactly as significant as the occasion demanded, delivered without exceeding what a charity gala can responsibly spend.
